Avoiding Frankenstein’s Monster: Integrated Classrooms Without Tech Running Amok

Primary Presenter: Andrew Bonham

Organization: Metropolitan State University of Denver

Role: Assistant Professor

Track: Discussion

Topic: Disruptive Innovation

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: A challenge associated with integrating technology into the classroom is avoiding going overboard, which can overwhelm students and inhibit productive learning. We will examine a biochemistry course that successfully integrated multiple technologies using flipped classroom, i>clickers, online feedback and assignments, and inquiry of public databases. This brief example will serve as the basis for an open discussion on how to (and how not to!) manage technologies to enhance, rather than take-over, the classroom.

Bio: Dr. Andrew J Bonham is a biochemist and educator with expertise in the transformative power of technology in the classroom. Dr. Bonham has previously presented at COLTT, MSU Denver Spring Forum, and MetroLEADS on the use of classroom technologies. Dr. Bonham's research program focused on novel bio-sensors conducted at the Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of California Santa Barbara has been featured by the American Chemical Society, Photonics magazine, and Science Newsline.

Description: Inspired by a multi-disciplinary group of faculty at the Metropolitan State University of Denver that formed a learning community on Transforming Teaching with Technology, a biochemistry course utilizing several different tools was run at the University during the 2012-2013 academic year.. This course integrated several varied technologies: flipped classroom lectures, i>clickers, online assignment managers, online surveys, and database learning assignments using NIH resources. The challenges faced in avoiding overwhelming students with technology, and using these tools to foster greater learning, will be explored in a short presentation on this course’s structure and integration of technology. This will serve as a jumping off point for an open discussion on ways to manage technology (especially multiple technology tools) in the classroom. Together we’ll learn how to embrace technology, in its different classroom flavors, without letting it become the focus of the classroom.
