Create Interactive eBook Apps with InDesign and Digital Publishing Suite

Primary Presenter: Michele Doucette

Co-Presenter: Scott Trudeau of Adobe Inc.

Organization: University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Role: Assistant Professor

Track: Demonstration

Topic: Digital Texts

Level: Advanced

Abstract: If you would like to learn how to design and publish an interactive eBook for multiple tablet and mobile devices, then this session is for you! We will take you step-by-step through planning, designing, and publishing interactive curriculum materials using Adobe InDesign and Digital Publishing Suite software. Participants will be provided supplementary materials summarizing the development, design, and publishing steps of an actual project that will be demonstrated during the session.

Bio: Michelle is an Assistant Professor in the CU Denver Department of Family Medicine, serving as the Education Specialist for Medical Student Education. Much of her current focus is in nutrition and preventive health, educational technology, e-learning, and website development in support of health education. Michelle holds a PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition Science from Emory University, a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from Georgia State University, and a BS in Engineering Sciences from Aurora University. She completed my postdoctoral work at Emory University in cell nutrient biology while receiving additional training as a health educator.

Description: This will be a collaborative demonstration presented by UC Denver School of Medicine (SOM) and Adobe. The session will demonstrate actual interactive e-learning eBook apps produced by the SOM Department of Family Medicine for their third year medical students. The session will take the participants step-by-step through the design and publishing process. The presenters will also provide a supplementary "e-Manual" (produced using InDesign and Digital Publishing Suite) for publishing their own interactive e-books/apps. Due to the many steps involved in designing and publishing a digital book and time constraints, this session will be more of a "demonstration" with some audience participation.

Attendee Requirements: While this will not be a full-blown workshop, the attendees would benefit from either having a base knowledge of InDesign and/or the presenters being able to hold this session in the computer lab in order for participants to practice a few of the key design and publishing concepts on laptops with the software installed.
