Primary Presenter: Amanda McAndrew

Co-Presenters: Andrew Saltarelli, Courtney Fell, and Edwige Simon

Organization: University of Colorado Boulder

Role: Teaching and Learning Consultant

Track: General Presentation

Topic: Hybrid Course Design

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: ASSETT and ALTEC have partnered to develop a practical approach to designing sustainable hybrid courses. In this session, we will provide a foundational overview for understanding hybrid courses rooted in instructional design principles. We will present an infographic that outlines the main steps of the design process. The four steps include planning, building, teaching, and evaluating. Examples of hybrid syllabi and learning activities will be provided.

Bio: Andy has a doctorate in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology from Michigan State University and is a new member of the ASSETT team. Andy has previously worked in instructional design and instructional technology for the past 5 years. Andy’s research and teaching interests center on the intersection of instructional technology and the social psychological processes underlying teaching and learning. Specifically, he’s particularly interested in matching evidence-based cooperative and active learning pedagogies with the unique affordances of innovative technologies to improve student motivation, wellbeing, and achievement. As an instructor, Andy has taught many face-to-face and online courses in areas such as developmental and educational psychology, teacher education, educational leadership, and instructional technology. He continues an active line of educational research in areas such as cooperative learning, motivation, student-to-student relatedness, and online communication technologies. While Andy is often immersed in and shaped by technology, he also believes it can drain us socially and emotionally and, when possible, he disconnects through running, backpacking, or letting his three young children jump on him for a while.

Description: ASSETT and ALTEC have partnered to develop a practical approach to designing sustainable hybrid courses. In this session, we will provide a foundational overview for understanding hybrid courses rooted in instructional design principles and learning theories. We will present an infographic that outlines the main steps of the design process. The four steps include planning, building, teaching and evaluating. Examples of hybrid syllabi and learning activities will be provided. Discussions will cover open educational resources (OER), assessment options, and best practices for integrating pedagogies and technologies. We will highlight challenges and opportunities and strategies for addressing them will be suggested. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences. They should bring a syllabus and be prepared to workshop ideas on how to redesign the course for hybrid delivery by integrating face-2-face and online activities.
