Web Conferencing Applications for Online Classes and Online Tutoring

Primary Presenter: Larry Giddings

Co-Presenter: Emily Forand

Organization: Pikes Peak Community College

Role: Writing Center Director

Track: Hands On Workshop

Topic: Global Education and Technology

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: This session will introduce and provide real-time practice with two web conferencing applications that can greatly enhance online teaching and online tutoring: Skype (free download) and WebEx (subscription). Before the session, participants should preload and update the free software at Skype.com on their own laptops or mobile devices, and they should establish Skype accounts as well. WebEx loads temporarily on the device in real-time and does not require user accounts.

Bio: Larry Giddings has been teaching and tutoring composition with contemporaneous technology since 1987. Beginning with the Multi-User Dimensions (MUDs) chat rooms in the late 1980s, this “information highway” journey has included teaching classes through email, online tutoring via AOL/MSN/Yahoo text chat, and teaching and tutoring in Second Life. Larry and the Pikes Peak Community College Writing Center tutors have used a variety of open access online tools (Etherpad, Titanpad, FreeConferenceCall, and Blackboard Collaborate), and Larry has most recently worked with WebEx and Skype.
