Using a Faculty MOOC to Collaboration on Scholarship and Research

Primary Presenter: Douglas Gilbert

Co-Presenter: George Love

Organization: University of the Rockies

Role: Dean, School of Organizational Leadership

Track: Research Presentation

Topic: MOOCs

Level: Advanced

Abstract: This research presentation will include the results of a faculty MOOC conducted several weeks before a conference. The MOOC is designed to follow an approach based on Design Thinking for Educators (http://www.designthinkingforeducators.com/). The session will thus provide insight into the use of a MOOC in a faculty community of practice environment and the use of a specific design approach.

Bio: Doug Gilbert is the Dean of the School of Organizational Leadership at the University of the Rockies in Denver, Colorado. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa, and an M.B.A. from the Université de Genève (IMD) in Switzerland. Prior to joining the University of Rockies and the University of Phoenix he worked in the legal profession, in industry, and management consulting for over 25 years. Doug's research interests are management education, including innovative educational methods such as MOOCs, and social construction models of curriculum design.

Description: The Design Thinking approach was chosen because it allows for a structured process of moving from developing generative ideas to a critical reduction to considerations for implementation. The respective units will have the following foci: Unit 1—Initiate; Unit 2—Discovering Context; Unit 3—Interpreting for Relevancy; Unit 4—Ideation; Unit 5—Prototyping Scholarship Models; and Unit 6—Evolving Results. The MOOC will conclude approximately two weeks before the conference to allow compilation of results.

The MOOC was developed in partnership with Pearson. The MOOC will be delivered via OpenClass, an easy to use and free learning environment with a proven track record on delivery of content. Pearson has offered not only use of its content, but support resources to help set up user-friendly course experience for all participants.
