Abstract: This session presents important considerations regarding the use of social media to communicate with and engage students. Based on empirical research, benefits and challenges of the use of social media by higher education institutions will be explored. Topics will include, but are not limited to, increasing engagement and social capital, dealing with federal guidelines as well as social media acceptance and use. Additionally, an investigation of higher education policy regarding social media will be presented.

 

Bio:Michael A. Erskine is the Project and Classroom Technology Manager at MSU Denver's Educational Technology Center. Additionally, Michael is a PhD candidate at the University of Colorado Denver. He received has M.S. in information systems from the University of Colorado Denver and his B.S. in computer information systems from MSU Denver. His research interests include geographic visualization, decision-making, disaster mapping and educational technologies. His work has been presented at the Americas Conference on Information System and the International Conference on Information Resources Management.

This session will present multiple perspectives and viewpoints on the use of social media in higher education. Additionally, the opportunity for participant engagement through an interactive question and answer format will be provided.
